Simply, Slowly And Gradually Improve Your Health

Simply, Slowly And Gradually Improve Your Health Every single day, we go through different mental and physical feelings that can impact us negatively. Whether it’s something we do or something completely out of our control, the instances will arrive at our feet. They’re frustrating, but they’re just part of life. If you have an active life that involves doing a lot of things, then you’re going to bump into a few obstacles along the way â€" that’s just how it goes. These problems can do a lot to our overall health. Whether it’s the stress element or in terms of physical damage, our bodies and minds can be affected. Yes, outside and external problems that make their way to our doorsteps are more difficult to prevent, but what about the things we do to ourselves? Well, they can absolutely be handled properly. Fixing yourself up and become a healthier individual is always a practice that’s portrayed as a grueling and difficult journey. Sure, if you want to be at your highest ever peak, you might need to put a few extra shifts in. If you just want to be a little better than last month or last year, then it doesn’t have to be that much of a slog. Here are just a few small things you could that would make a big difference.  Get Yourself Into A Little Routine Routines are important if you want to first get yourself into a better mindset. If you know exactly what you have to do every single morning or every single evening, then you’re going to have a much clearer head. When things are all over the place, that’s when you can get a little off track. Your mind is sort of important, so you need to get that little thing in order before you do anything else, and a routine could be the best way of doing so.  Raise Or Lower Your Meals Ever So Slightly If you’re a little overweight or a little underweight, then you don’t have to quit foods cold turkey or start stuffing your face respectively. By acting in extreme ways, then you’re only going to be hurting yourself even more. If you want to lose a few pounds, then all you have to do is remove a little from a single meal out of the day. Once you find that you’re making progress, you can remove a little more. There’s no need to hurt your body and mind by going over the top. These things take time whether you like it or not, so you might as well enjoy it along the way.  Quit Smoking Right Now The evidence is overwhelming that smoking is bad for your health.   If youve recently switched to vaping because you werent able to quit smoking, kudos for the effort . . . BUT . . . the evidence against vaping is mounting that it, too, is a clear negative for your health.   Its time to stop inhaling anything except clean air.  You Don’t Always Need Alcohol To Have A Good Time If you like to drink, then you know that alcohol can make you feel a little merrier. It can also loosen your inhibitions and give you all of the confidence in the world. Alcohol doesn’t always have to be the answer, though. The idea of going out with your friends while sober is one that is usually met with sniggers, but it’s such a good idea if you’re looking to boost your health on a holistic level. You might also be able to go an entire evening without embarrassing yourself, too!

Change is good for the soul

Change is good for the soul If you have ever sautéed vegetables, you know that if you fail to give the pan enough “umph!” the veggies will not jump and flip. You have to get the wrist involved and even use a little arm muscle to toss them and get them to land back in the pan. If you do not give the pan enough of a wrist flick or use enough arm muscle, the veggies will not jump and twist but just slide around in the pan, un-airborne. Relocating to a new city is a more complex endeavor than sautéing vegetables, however the same simple principle applies. Do not half-ass it. Below are 7 tips to consider when making a change in location. (Note: While many oppose the idea of moving somewhere without their next opportunity lined up, I did it anywayâ€" sort of. I thought that it would be difficult to grow my professional network, interview, and attend events in the Sarasota community from thousands of miles away in Chicago, so I temporarily lived with family before finding a place to live and my next career endeavor.) 1.       Consult the locals If you do not have family where you are moving, maybe there are friends or a friend of a friend you can meet with. Ask them about the best neighborhoods to live in, the sketchy parts of town to avoid, find out who their professional network/contacts are and determine if you can meet them, visit their favorite grocery store, yoga studio, the list goes on and on and it is only a jumping off point.  2.       Research Go to Starbucks or a local non-chain coffee shop, read local magazines, newspapers, and yelp to read reviews on places that interest you. Start to discover the culture. Make like an anthropologist and take notes. Identify questions. Soak it in. “Like” the city’s Facebook pages, follow local organizations on Twitter and Instagram.   3.       Events Events Events Go to them! These can be keynote speaker presentations, happy hours, fundraisers, runs, workshops, the theater, yoga. Say yes as much as you can and ensure you stay balanced to avoid burnout. Whenever you attend an event, dress professionally. If you do not have business cards, bring a pen and notecard to jot down your information. Graciously accept others’ business cards. (Actual stack of business cards I received while  growing professional network in 1 month)   Which leads me to my next point… 4.       Follow up Send an email to your new contact the following day, letting them know it was a pleasure to meet them and â€" if they offered to be a professional resource for you â€" enclose your resume. Unknowingly, I met my future boss at an event. Excited to grow my professional network and enjoy the beautiful surroundings at the Powell Crosley Estate, I sent a follow up message the next day, and that’s how our initial partnership conversations started.  5.    Mail a hand written thank you note I know, I know, I already mentioned this in my graduates’ column. Hello, my name is Kelly and I am obsessed with hand written notes. However, this is a courteous and important gesture after someone has shared their time with you to discuss a career opportunity.  6.       Disconnect Once you find a place to live, all addresses need to be updated at your banks, cell phone, cable, mail forwarded, belongings sold or packed, movers arranged, medical records requested, and the list of moving logistics goes on. With these tactical loose ends sorted, you will probably want to make time for personal good-byes to your family and/or friends in your old city. You could set up a time to meet up with friends and provide the details they will want to know (who, what, when, where, why). Keep the tone upbeat. If they cannot make it, maybe you can meet for lunch or froyo or coffee. Go see your favorite yoga teacher and take one last class. (Warning, you might cry saying goodbye…hey I blame the hip openers, any yogi knows these unleash our emotions.) 7.       Connect Include photos of family and friends in your interior design efforts as you make your new place feel like home.   Stay connected to your old tribe through weekly or monthly calls, an impromptu FaceTime or Skype sesh, emails, cards, social media. Find a gym or yoga studio or running and biking place in your new spot. Take care of you. Journal. Treat yourself to a mani pedi. Use your research from tip #2 to find a salon with rave reviews and freshen up with a haircut. And while you are looking fabulous and meeting people, you might get some new intel on underground places â€" the unique word of mouth finds that are not online. And then, you’ll really start to feel less like an outsider and more like a local. And, as you  learn new habits, you will realize that this growth and stretching and change is good for your soul. And, finally, as you are out and about and settling in, you will realize that one of the best parts of having an “all in” frame of mind when relocating, is that you can start to align with people and organizations that share your values. So together, you can make a positive impact in your community. And that is change that  is refreshing  for you and everyone around you. Have you ever relocated? What did you learn? @kellymc247 Columnist Archive

Benefits of Working Overseas - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career

Benefits of Working Overseas - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career Have you ever considered living in another country? Do you know what to do if you are presented with such an opportunity? Moving to a different country is not easy because it requires you to get out of your comfort zone. However, it helps you to develop new skills and gain new experiences. Below you can find some of these benefits you will gain through working abroad. Self- Improvement: Every country is different than each other. It has different set of rules and customs. Therefore, when you move to a new country, you will need to learn how people live their daily life and how they interact with each other. Basically, you need to learn their culture. Especially, the workplace culture can be very different than you normally used to in the US. For example; in Japan, hierarchy is very important and you cannot directly talk with your higher-ups. However, the US has a more open business culture and you can directly talk with your seniors, if you need to. Therefore, it may take you some time to adapt to a new country and as a result, you learn to be more flexible and considerate. Learn a New Language: The best way to learn another language is to live in a country where that language is their mother tongue. During the first 6 months, you may have difficulty but with the help of classes in a language school or some private tutoring, you can quickly throw your concerns away. You will see that once you pass that threshold, you will start to speak in that language and the more you speak, the more you will improve yourself. Don’t forget that when you return back to your hometown, being bilingual can open you many doors and help you boost your pay. Travel to New Places: When you start to live in a different part of the world, you can go and visit places you normally cannot in your short vacations or even on weekends. As a result, you become more aware of the world and get the chance to see how different people in different geographical locations live. Traveling to new places widens your horizons and so, you start to look at everything from a different point of view. You build more confidence in yourself and become self-reliant since you already know what to do in a place you have never been before.

5 Things to Avoid If You Want to Excel in Your Career

5 Things to Avoid If You Want to Excel in Your Career Photo Credit â€" Pexels.comHave you ever met someone who treated a great career like a dead-end job? We’ve all encountered people like this in our careers. They show up late and leave early; they do the bare minimum just to collect their salary. It leaves you to wonder what they think about their future and if they even have a long-term plan. This person isn’t you. You are a go-getter and will take every opportunity to advance that you’re given.evalYou certainly have the right attitude. Now all you need to do is avoid these five career-damaging pitfalls.1. Fly by the seat of your pantsYou can care about your job and want to advance, but if you don’t have a plan to do so, it’s less likely to happen. If you want to achieve greatness, plan for it. It helps to write your plans down, so you can hold yourself accountable. Be as specific as possible.“Getting a promotion” is a lucrative plan, but it only gives you a general goal. Instead, figure out which position you’d like to be promoted to and when you’d like to be promoted. For example, a good goal might look like this: “Get promoted to general manager within three years.”Once you’ve written your goal, everything you do from here on out will be in support of your goal. When you’re having a rough day, think about your goal. When you’re having a great day, think about your goal.Always try to go the extra mile and take constructive criticisms from management to adjust your behavior as necessary.Flying by the seat of your pants may work for sometimes for some very lucky people, but most people have to work for what they want.evalSuccessful professionals are fully aware of who they want to be in this world. They know exactly how they’ll be of service, and they have a very clear path to their goals.Begin to map out your career, and it will quickly fall into place.2. Ignore your healthSuccessful people know that health and nutrition are important parts of keeping your mind sharp and your body ag ile. If you eat a diet rich in junk food, you have the potential to be deficient in vitamins.Your body uses vitamins and minerals to function. Without the right balance, a host of problems could arise. One of the most concerning problems for someone looking to climb the corporate ladder is brain fog.evalMental clarity is crucial for impressing your boss and cultivating attention from everyone around you. It can also play a major role in productivity, performance, and decision-making.Pay special attention to getting the following nutrients:B-complex â€" The vitamins in the B family are important for many reasons, but one is to handle methylation in the body. This plays a large role in supporting the body’s natural detoxification process, which will help rid your body of toxins and keep your mind clear.Vitamin D â€" This vitamin is involved in too many bodily functions to list, but it is especially important for the brain because it helps support neural connections.Omega-3 fatty aci ds â€" The brain is mostly made up of fat with omega-3 fatty acids being the main lubricant for synaptic connections. Synaptic connections are how messages are sent within the brain. If there’s an issue here, you may start having trouble remembering things. 3. Succumb to work pressuresIt’s no secret that work can be stressful. Some careers are more intense than others. You may find yourself pulling all-nighters to meet deadlines or losing sleep over losing a client.Work affects our lives in so many ways, and it can be especially troublesome for someone who is focused on advancement. But most people who are truly successful in their lives and careers have a positive way to deal with stress. They may meditate, talk to a counselor or hit a punching bag every week. They do not self-medicate because they know how quickly this can lead to a substance abuse problem. Having one beer or glass of wine after a long day of work can be a slippery slope that ends in addiction.4. Be afraid to t alk about your accomplishmentsThere’s a time and place for everything, but most people who are successful in their careers get there by gently reminding the right people of their accomplishments.Of course, you want to be careful about boasting or patting yourself too hard on the back. If this feels like uncharted territory for you, simply keep a running tab of your work-related accomplishments throughout the year.Your list may include things like getting a new client, navigating a tricky customer service issue or saving the company money. It’s always best if you can assign a realistic dollar value to your accomplishments. When your review rolls around, bring this list with you and remind your boss of all the great things you’ve done for the company. Because of you, they made money, saved money and/or avoided embarrassment.5. Step on other peopleevalThere are exceptions to every rule, but most successful people don’t get to the top by stepping on others along the way. They don ’t take credit for things that others have done, and they are always happy to give credit to others on their team. There’s a reason this works so well in business. People who don’t treat their peers or subordinates kindly are showing a lack of character. They aren’t as likely to advance in their careers as someone who exudes honesty, integrity, and hard work.Think about it this way: Who would you want representing your company at a high level? Would you choose someone who lies, cheats and steals to get whatever he wants? That guy may lie to or steal from you too.You may have encountered people in your career who have done all of these things and still become successful. Know that they are the exception and their ride to the top was probably a lot bumpier than yours will be.

Motivation Monday Enjoy the Journey

Motivation Monday Enjoy the Journey We are all works in process-   Being molded and shaped by our experiences both personally and professionally. During your transition after a layoff, this process can be painful and enlightening. You have lost part of your professional identity, your friends and your routine.   You feel the financial pressures and anxiety that comes from the uncertainty of what is next. Turn this into a positive opportunity of self awareness, awareness about yourself and a new beginning. One of my favorite sayings is, Life is a journey, not a destination by Ralph Waldo Emerson There are no decisions that are truly wrong- as long as you have made them. Here are some reminders/tips to help you with your journey: Be sure of who you are Be certain about what brings you joy and fulfillment Know your strengths and weaknesses Try really hard to be the same authentic person in the workplace and at home Dont be afraid to be YOU Dont ignore the obvious Moving in any direction is usually better than not moving at all Seek the love and support of friends and family As this week begins, what will you do to start your unique journey?

How to effectively network during the holiday season - Hallie Crawford

How to effectively network during the holiday season During the holiday season it can be hard to focus on your career transition and goals. You’d be surprised at how much you can utilize this time to really network yourself. Here are some networking tips for you to use during this holiday season. Keep these in mind when you’re at holiday parties, shopping, spending time with your friends and family, etc. We all connect with people more throughout the holidays. This can be a great opportunity for you to really progress on your career path. Dont take for granted that people understand what you do. You told your cousins that you work as an account manager and to think all these years they assumed you did peoples taxes for a living! If youve been keeping your professional life under wraps for too long, its time to update people on what you do. Find ways to work your job into conversations. Send out a group email with a virtual business card and a little note explaining that youd like to reach out and perform some professional networking. It may feel slightly uncomfortable at first, but keep at it, soon both you and your pals will get used to this new style of communication. Be opportunistic, but dont push your luck. There is a fine line between keeping family/friends updated on your professional endeavors, and being downright pushy. Were talking about your friends here, so you want to tread carefully in this area. For example, if you sell jewelry and have a couple of aunts whom you think might be interested in attending your next event, bring it up to them in a friendly way. But if they seem the least bit uneasy, do NOT push the issue. Sometimes its not worth trying to turn a friendship into a professional relationship, and vice versa. Carry your card on you at all times. I hear this one all the time: people dont want to take up a ton of their friends or familys time discussing work. This is where the business card comes in handy. When people ask what youve been up to, segue into a brief chat about your job, and then slip them the card just in case they know anybody. As the famous song goes, its a small world after all. Even if the next door neighbor has no use for your hand-blown glass figurines, she may have a brother whose wife owns an art gallery and hey, you never know. Be optimistic. Seek out the older, wiser, and more experienced. Holidays present a great opportunity to connect with the older generation who just might be seasoned professionals in your field. Before your next family gathering, do your homework. Ask your parents what their brothers, sisters, aunts and uncles do for a living. Pose the same question to your best friends. When you get to the party, be prepared to ask questions of those who’ve “been there done that” in your industry and get ready to make some career connections while learning something new.
